STRESS-FREE MOVING PLANS

Moving day can be hectic and chaotic if you aren’t prepared ahead. The Nortown Movers team can help you plan your move. We will guide you throughout the process to make sure you’re not pressurized over the move. Listed below are the steps you should take to ensure the move is easy and smooth.

FOUR WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE

  • Take a tour of your home and decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity. Consider having a garage sale.

  • Call your physicians and dentists for recommendations of doctors near your new residence.

  • Get copies of renewable prescriptions.

  • Have school records transferred.

  • Check homeowner's insurance policies to see if moving is covered.

  • Transfer fire, theft and other personal property insurance to ensure your new home is protected.

  • Transfer personal insurance records.

THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE

  • Use up most food items before the move.

  • Check and clear tax assessments.

  • Get your major appliances serviced before you move them.

  • Use up aerosols, flammables, corrosives or ammunition or give them away before you move as movers can’t take them. Empty propane tanks as well as lawnmower fuel tanks.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE

  • Make your travel reservations for the trip.

  • Fill out change-of-address forms for each person receiving mail at home in order to notify the Post Office, magazines you subscribe to, etc.

  • Close or transfer all charge accounts.

  • Return borrowed things such as library books and collect things you've loaned, and items in layaway, cold storage, etc.

  • Arrange to discontinue utilities and delivery services.

  • Fill out the "Welcome to Your New Home" data sheet for the new owners.

  • Dispose cleaning fluids, acids, caustic drain cleaners and other fluids to protect your shipment from damage.

ONE WEEK BEFORE THE MOVE

  • Transfer bank accounts and your records to your new city.

  • Reconfirm travel reservations.

  • Have your cable TV disconnected.

  • Ensure connection of utilities in new home.

  • Draw up a floor plan of your new home to indicate the placement of furnishings to make moving easier.

  • Make sure you have cash, certified check or money order to pay the driver before goods are unloaded (unless your employer is paying the charges or you've arranged to pay by credit card).

  • Set aside maps, games, snacks, flashlight as well as medicines and papers you'll take in your car.

  • Have the phone disconnected in your old place and get it connected in your new home.

  • Drain water from all garden hoses.

  • Start packing your luggage.

  • Drain gasoline from the lawn mower.

  • Anything that our team will be packing should be left in place.

THE DAY BEFORE THE MOVE

  • Get the name, address and phone number of your destination agent.

  • Place your cleaning supplies, toiletries and a coffee pot in a special box to be loaded last and unloaded first.

  • Finish packing the entire luggage.

  • Defrost, clean and dry the refrigerator.

THE DAY OF THE MOVE

  • Be on hand all day to answer questions, accompany driver during inventory, sign bill of lading, and confirm your new address and delivery date. Be sure to advise him of your en route accommodations and telephone number, if known.

  • Check every room and storage area one last time to ensure all windows and doors are locked, keys are transferred and lights are out.
